That One Year

My mom hugged me a little longer, a little tighter.

Her teary voice said, "I cannot tell you what a gift you are to me. You have blessed me every day of your life."

Her voice and the scene were broken by a giggle.

She added, "I mean, except for that one year."

(Thirteen is a rough go for everyone involved.)
