What Does Houston Need? Underwear.

“I’m going to ask you for what we really need,” Brené Brown said on her Instagram video that she filmed from the NRG stadium in Houston.

Houston had done an all-call for licensed social workers, and so of course she went to volunteer with other social workers, medical personnel, and volunteers. In the video, Brené is wearing a Rising Strong sweatshirt, which is perfect for that setting in every single way.

She said,

“This is not a community that needs things to be pretty or wrapped in a bow. We need underwear.”

Here’s the thing: People donate used clothes, but they do not donate used underwear. And there’s a shortage.

Even in a non-tragic disaster, people start periods. People have accidents. Grownups and kids. And some parents lose jobs if they leave to bring clean underwear.

Right now, it’s one thing people don’t have.

I think we all know: underwear is something we take for granted until we don’t have it.

This is about smelling.
It’s about not being clean.
It’s about getting rashes.
It’s about dignity.

We need underwear. Panties. Chones. Men’s, women’s, children’s, any size.

Keep thinking about us. It’s as bad as it looks on TV.”

Brene has partnered with a nonprofit called Undies for Everyone. Their only goal is to distribute underwear, and they don’t process or give anything but underwear. They’re legit, the real deal.

And so, straight from her link, here’s how we can help to give NEW (still in package) underwear:

  1. Purchase from Undies for Everyone‘s Amazon wishlist. Please keep in mind, they need a variety of sizes for men, women, boys, and girls, including XXL for adults.
  2. Donate money on their website, and Undies for Everyone will purchase wholesale.  Go to their link, and click the “Donate” button to give today.
  3. Collect new, packaged underwear.  This is a great project for neighborhoods and schools.  If you are purchasing, they recommend and request Hanes or Fruit of the Loom.  You can send your collection to:

Undies for Everyone

Let’s get the people what they need.

  1. Thanks for posting, Tricia; I just made a donation. It’s a joy to know we’re doing something specific to meet a true need for these hurting people.
