“Mommy, I have a friend at school who has that problem in his brain where words just come out without him being able to help it.”

“That’s called Tourette’s, and no, he doesn’t.”

“Yes, he does.”

“No, he doesn’t.  Actually, buddy, it’s a very, very rare disorder, and even the people who have it don’t usually have that kind.  Boys like to say they have that disorder, because they think it will keep them from being responsible for what they say and do.”

(Pause.)

“Mommy, you know me really well.”

“I do.”

“Okay, well, he does have diabetes.  Or his brother does.  Or his grandma.”

“I’ll give you that possibility.”
