A Bouquet of Freshly Sharpened Pencils

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Shopping for School Supplies.

I get all fluttery just reading the list.

Crayola markers, with your broad tips and vibrant colors.  Oh my goodness, I’d like to marry a version of you.

Pink Pearl Erasers, you are so timeless in your everlasting nature, that I wonder if Cane and Abel used Pink Pearls as well.

Crayola Crayons, I can smell you in my mind, your Purple Mountains Majesty and your Macaroni and Cheese.  And the Yellow Green that is exactly the color I would use if I were drawing a landscape of the tree in my backyard.

500 pages of white paper… oh, the glorious weight of you.

Pencils.  Oh, pencils.  So pristine in your pre-sharpened loveliness.  lead pencils in metal cup isolated on white

My third grader needs red pens this year, which will being his foray into the crazy bliss of colored inks.

I even get a little verklempt over the gallon size ZipLoc bags.  I mean, just think of the possibilities.

The best part: I ordered it all through Amazon Prime.  Which means, of course, that all 38 items will be here by the end of the week, and it will be like Christmas morning.

Also, I didn’t have to walk through the aisles at Target and wonder if it’s okay if I get 20-count of this instead of 25-count of that since that’s all I can find, or a package of 3 Post-It pads instead of the requested package of 2, since I’ve rarely met a teacher who thought, “You know what I have too much of?  Sticky notes.  Good grief.”

I went ahead and tossed an electric pencil sharpener into my virtual shopping cart.  My generosity knows no bounds.

My kids aren’t nearly so thrilled, but I don’t take this personally.  My enthusiasm covers everyone’s entrance fee.

  1. I love that you get verklempt over school supplies!

  2. It’s good to know I’m not the only person addicted to school supplies. What a relief!

  3. Shopping for school supplies was always a favorite activity. I still miss it! Of course, I’m a teacher and I was a sucker for every new item. Now that my kids have grown, I still go up and down the school supply aisle.
