5280 Magazine: Wife, Reborn.

This week, I did a phone interview with Robert Sanchez, senior staff writer with 5280 magazine.  Robert and I worked closely together last year, as he profiled our family in an article titled Wife, Interrupted.  He followed up this week with a Q & A for the 5280 blog, and the piece was published yesterday.

We did the interview on the phone while I strolled the mall, varying locations from my car in the parking lot, a bench on the sidewalk, a table in the food court, and finally a comfy chair near Bath & Body Works. I walked and talked, I stopped to think, I browsed and remembered.

Robert is very gracious in his questions, very comfortable to talk to, and easily makes me forget I’m doing a phone interview.  It feels more like a catch-up chat with a  friend.

He had some questions about “Denver’s new and famous author.”  And for a moment, I thought, “Who is Denver’s new and famous author?  I’d love to read her stuff!”  Oh, wait.  I think he’s talking about me.  Oh my word.  He’s talking about me.

He asked my thoughts on dating, on new love, and suddenly I felt very Sleepless in Seattle, when Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) is on the radio with Dr. Marcia Fieldstone, and he’s talking candidly about what he misses, how he’s getting through the day, what he thinks could happen next.

Doctor Marcia Fieldstone: People who truly loved once are far more likely to love again. Sam, do you think there’s someone out there you could love as much as your wife?
Sam Baldwin: Well, Dr. Marcia Fieldstone, that’s hard to imagine.

Doctor Marcia Fieldstone: What are you going to do?
Sam Baldwin: Well, I’m gonna get out of bed every morning… breathe in and out all day long. Then, after a while I won’t have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out… and, then after a while, I won’t have to think about how I had it great and perfect for a while.

Doctor Marcia Fieldstone: Tell me what was so special about your wife?

Sam Baldwin: Well, how long is your program? Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together… and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home… only to no home I’d ever known… I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like… magic.

I sipped diet Coke from my ChickFilA cup.  “Well, Robert, yes.  I would love to find love again. I would love to have a partner again. I’d like to have dinner conversation with someone again. I’d like to raise my kids with somebody they can love, too.”
